South Africa after Mandela?  Rethinking the Transition from Apartheid

Gillian Hart

Amidst the global outpouring of grief following Nelson Mandela's death,
fierce debates erupted over his role and legacy in post-apartheid South
Africa.  In this talk I will engage these debates, drawing on my book
Rethinking the South African Crisis to suggest the imperative for revised
understandings of the transition from apartheid and Mandela's role in it.

Gillian Hart is Professor of Geography and Co-Chair of Development Studies
at UC Berkeley, and Honorary Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Her recent books include Gramsci: Space, Nature, Politics (Wiley-Blackwell
2013; co-edited with Mike Ekers, Stefan Kipfer and Alex Loftus), and
Rethinking the South African Crisis: Nationalism, Populism, Hegemony
(University of KwaZulu-Natal Press 2013 and University of Georgia Press
2014).
