Stuart Kirsch (Anthropology - University of Michigan) - Beyond the Text: The Politics of Engaged Research
The Politics of Engaged Research. Scholars increasingly mobilize ethnographic research for constructive interventions into politics. This workshop will consider what happens when researchers become activists, expert witnesses, authors of social impact studies, corporate consultants, and public intellectuals. Drawing on the author's work in the Pacific and the Amazon, it considers whether politically-engaged research produces "good enough" ethnography as well as whether it is "good for" disciplines that engage in ethnographic practice.
