"Memories of War and Resistance:Women's Voices from Colombia"

With special guests María Emma Wills-Obregón (Colombia's Commission for Historical Memory) and  Pilar Riaño-Alcalá (UBC Social Work)

Between 2009 and 2011 Colombia's Commission for Historical Memory conducted a study on women, war and resistance in the Caribbean region of Colombia. This landmark study, aimed at documenting the violent
practices, gender arrangements and social order imposed by the paramilitary armies and the guerrillas on the daily lives of men and women in those regions most impacted by the war between 1995 and 2010.
Learn directly from the Report's two main authors as they explore variations in the repertoires of terror and sexual violence of armed groups against civilian populations and the differential impacts of
war on men and women in two emblematic cases of massacres and sexual violence in the Caribbean region of Colombia.

Our special event will feature an open lecture by the authors (Professors Riaño-Alcalá and Wills-Obregón) who will present the major findings from the Report "Women and War: Victims and Resistance in the
Colombian Caribbean". A question and answer session will follow. This will offer an opportunity for those who are interested in exploring the ethical and methodological challenges of doing ethnographic work
with women victims of violence to participate. The aim is to stimulate horizontal conversation and learning for all on this issue.
