Cinema of Resistance Chair: Kajri Jain, Assistant Professor, Visual Studies, UTM & Department of Fine Art, University of Toronto Anand Patwardhan has been making political documentaries for nearly three decades pursuing diverse and controversial issues that are at the crux of social and political life in India. His films address issues such as corruption, slums, communalism etc. Anand’s films include Bombay: Our City (1985), Ram ke Nam (In the Name of God) (1992), Pitr, Putr aur Dharmayuddha (Father, Son and Holy War) (1995), and Jang aur Aman (War and Peace) (2002). These films have won national and international awards. His latest documentary is Jai Bhim Comrade (2011) based on police firing incident against Dalits in Mumbai in 1997. Many of his films were at one time or another banned by state television channels in India and became the subject of litigation by Patwardhan who successfully challenged the censorship rulings in court.
